The city of Amsterdam is certainly a huge international intersection, with countless airlines stopping off in what is the Netherlands’ largest city. Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world due to its capacity for large volumes of people and also due to its convenient location in Western Europe. The US, Europe and Asia are all extremely well served from Amsterdam’s principal airport. However, like many airports around the world, getting into the city centre from the airport itself poses an issue. That said, Amsterdam is better served than many when it comes to getting into the city. The best option is probably the train - there are direct trains available to Amsterdam Central Station costing around €4 and the journey should take no longer than 20 minutes. Importantly, trains run 24 hours a day with a frequency of around five an hour, though this is reduced to one an hour between 1am and 5am. Taxis are a comfortable option for those accustomed to private motorised transport, but can be expensive, perhaps as much as €50 depending on the traffic levels. If the roads are busy, the journey into the centre of Amsterdam can take the best part of an hour, though at quieter times this is reduced to well under half an hour. So there are certainly plenty of options getting from Schiphol Airport into the centre of Amsterdam. And once you’re in the city centre, it’s safe to say that there’s plenty to do there. Despite the fact that Amsterdam is relatively small when compared to many European capital cities, there is definitely an argument to be made that it is the one that presents the most options for visitors. For instance, many people love to take a cruise down Amsterdam’s canals, whether it’s on an open top boat or a more luxurious one. Amsterdam also houses some of Europe’s best museums, the Van Gogh Museum is always popular with visitors, as is the world-famous Anne Frank House. Many people also enjoy taking in what is known as Amsterdam’s “cafe culture”, whereby tourists and locals alike meet up at one of the cities many cafes, for either lunch, coffee or just to pass the time. On top of all of this, Amsterdam also offers some of the best opportunities for shopping in all of Europe, and visitors can peruse everything from shopping complexes, stylish boutiques, open-air markets and second-hand shops. Whether you’re coming in, or flying out, Amsterdam certainly offers you the ultimate Dutch experience, and whether you’re staying in the city centre or you’re there on a flying visit and need an Amsterdam airport hotel, you’ll enjoy your stay in the city. |
